The Key to Stopping the Vaping Epidemic:
Change the Messaging to Teens


Media messaging has always been a powerful tool for the tobacco industry, first with cigarettes and now with e-cigarettes. However, media has also been essential in challenging the tobacco industry. One notable example was the efforts of the Truth Initiative. The Truth Initiative aims to stop the tobacco industry from spreading lies and misinformation and harming young people. Their message resonated with the younger audience and helped lead to a dramatic decrease in cigarette use among youth.

The tobacco industry has changed their image by entering the e-cigarette industry. Their media strategy has supported the misconception that Juul and other e-cigarette devices are "safe". Additionally, the design and flavoring of their products has contributed to the dissociation of e-cigarettes from "other" tobacco/nicotine products. The Massachusetts Health Council aims to support efforts to disrupt this illusion seen by teens and young adults through another massive media messaging campaign.
